How we are regulated

At Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE), we operate under a licence granted by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI) and our day to day activities are regulated by the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation (the Utility Regulator).

The principal objective of the Utility Regulator and DETI is to protect the interests of electricity consumers. The Consumer Council for Northern Ireland is responsible for representing electricity consumers and dealing with their complaints.

We derive revenue principally by charging electricity suppliers for use of the distribution system and by charges for transmission services (for use of the transmission system) which are levied on the System Operator Northern Ireland (SONI)
