Connection for large scale generation

There are two options available for generation connections of 33 kV.

Commission an feasibility study

A feasibility study is an optional study providing indicative costs for your generation connection to help you to develop your own business plan.

This is typically carried out before you make a formal application to DOE Planning Service to obtain approval for your generation scheme.

The study indicates the current capacity available, details of the work required to provide connection and the connection point to the NIE Network.

You should be aware that a feasibility study does not reserve network capacity for a particular project, and NIE cannot guarantee that a connection will be available when making a formal application for a Network Connection & Capacity Study.

Apply for a generation connection

The generation connection application (G59) is provided to customers who have obtained all permissions, including planning permission, or equivalent for tidal or hydro generation at the date of connection application.

Wind farms

NIE cannot offer terms for connection until the wind farm has attained Planning Permission.  A pdf copy of the Planning Consent must be accompanied with the generator questionnaire.

Generation cluster substations

NIE have identified 8 cluster substations around Northern Ireland. These are located in areas of concentration of wind farm applications.

Generation within a commercial high voltage supply

NIE cannot offer terms for connection until the generation has attained Planning Permission.  All generation which could export onto the network will be required to comply with the Distribution Code [1.36MB PDF] and be tested.
