In line with EU directives, competition has been introduced into the Northern Ireland electricity market and all customers (business and domestic) are now able to choose between a number of competing electricity supply companies.
Electricity supply companies buy wholesale electricity from electricity generators and supply it to consumers like any other product or service.
They pay a network operator (NIE T&D) to deliver the electricity, through their wires, to your premises. The generation of renewable electricity is on the increase in Northern Ireland and a number of electricity supply companies are keen to enter into agreements with renewable energy generators for the purchase of their renewable electricity.
To discuss opportunities for purchasing your renewable electricity you should contact an electricity supplier. Visit the Utility Regulator and the Consumer Council websites [links open in a new window] to get a list of suppliers and to find out more about electricity market opening in Northern Ireland.
