NIE engineers carrying out network maintenanceNetwork maintenance

Maintaining the electricity network is a major part of our day to day work.

Northern Ireland's electricity network is made up of approximately 45,000 kilometres of lines and cables and around 250 major substations.

Keeping these in working order requires frequent equipment maintenance.

We regularly survey the network to identify where work is required. We survey by air, using specialised helicopters, and on foot where engineers 'walk the line' to inspect each electricity pole.

These patrols help us to identify if equipment needs to be replaced or if trees or vegetation needs cut next to overhead lines.
