Bridging the electricity network in Omagh

21/02/2012

If you have been travelling on the Doogary Road, Omagh recently you may have noticed a new bridge over the road. This scaffold bridge has been assembled to allow Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE), the network company, to connect a new overhead electricity line into the existing Omagh Main substation.

To accommodate this new line, construction work is also taking place to extend the substation and cranes have been in place to lift steel gantries into position. Omagh Main is one of NIE's main substations in the area and converts electricity from 110, 000 Volts to 33, 000 Volts. Electricity going to customers in the Tyrone areas goes through this substation.

All of this work is part of an investment project to extend and reinforce the electricity network in the Omagh area to facilitate the transportation of electricity from wind farm developments to other parts of Northern Ireland. Work will be continuing at the substation for approximately another two months.
