IRFU JOINS ECO ENERGY 'LINE UP'
The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU, Ulster Branch) has decided to 'tackle' harmful CO2 emissions head on by opting for Northern Ireland Electricity's environmentally friendly electricity, Eco Energy.

Most electricity is made from fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas), which may have a damaging effect on the environment by contributing to climate change. NIE offers customers the choice to opt for Eco Energy, which is an alternative source of green electricity, supplied from non-polluting and renewable energy sources such as wind power.

Ulster Rugby's David Humphreys and Andy Ward joined 'Eco Eddy', NIE's new green energy mascot, to celebrate the IRFU Ulster Branch's choice to 'Try' Eco Energy.

Michael Reid, Chief Executive of IRFU (Ulster Branch) said -

"We are delighted to be the first 'green' sports venue in Northern Ireland. At the Ulster Branch, we are keen to minimise the impact of our activities on the environment and also lend our weight to renewable energy schemes in Northern Ireland.

"We hope that our lead in switching on to green electricity will encourage others within Northern Ireland's sports industry to 'do their bit' for the environment".

Congratulating the Ulster Branch on their green credentials, Andy McCrea, NIE’s Environmental Services Manager said -

"The IRFU Ulster Branch are leading the sports industry in sustainability in Northern Ireland. We commend them for adopting a responsible attitude towards minimising harmful carbon emissions that cause climate change.

"Sport is an industry packed with role models - we hope the IRFU Ulster Branch will inspire others to follow their lead in making the best energy choice for the environment and supporting renewable energy in Northern Ireland.

"Choosing green energy may also make good financial sense, as the electricity produced from renewable sources is exempt from the recently introduced Climate Change Levy and is also evidence of an organisation's green credentials".

Householders in Northern Ireland can follow the IRFU's lead and register their home for Eco Energy. Signing up for 10% Eco Energy will cost the typical householder about 4.5p per week extra. To register or for further information, please call 08457 455 455.
