| Council and NIE Perform Environmental Double Act |
|
Cookstown District Council has clearly acted in the best interests of the local environment by switching all Council premises from traditional energy sources to Northern Ireland Electricity’s environmentally friendly electricity, Eco Energy.
Environmentally friendly because from now on, all of the Council’s electricity needs will be supplied by wind power.
NIE’s larger than life ‘green’ energy superhero, Eco Eddy, stole the show when he dropped into the Burnavon Arts Centre to meet the Council Chairman, Cllr Pearse McAleer.
Welcoming Eco Eddy on his first visit to Cookstown , Cllr McAleer said:
“Cookstown is an area of outstanding natural beauty with a unique multitude of attractions and sites of great interest. It is crucial that we maintain an environment which keeps it that way.
“I am pleased that the Council has taken the decision to opt for Eco Energy reinforcing our strong commitment to the environment. Climate change is a real issue both locally and further afield – we must show civic leadership and take responsibility for our energy use. By opting for Eco Energy, all of the electricity used throughout Council premises is now emission free. I would urge other businesses and homes within the District to follow our lead”.
Congratulating Cookstown District Council on their ‘green’ credentials, Andy McCrea, NIE’s Environment Manager reinforced the message:
“Most electricity is made from fossil fuels, which may have a damaging effect on the environment by contributing to climate change.
“It is important for us all, whether at work or home, to realise the impact of using all types of energy. Eco Energy gives our customers a choice to opt to have their electricity supplied from a non-polluting source.
“The way it works is that we buy the same amount of electricity which the Council uses from existing windfarms and feed it into the electricity system.
“For a typical householder, it can cost as little as four and a half pence per week extra to choose Eco Energy and do their bit to help save the environment.”
