Electric International Festival

20/08/2007

If you’re looking for something fun, festive and free to do this coming Bank Holiday weekend, make your way to Botanic Gardens on Sunday 26th (Aug) for The Belfast Mela 2007, an international summer festival.

The Belfast Mela 2007, sponsored by Northern Ireland Electricity, is a celebration of the changing cultural mix of Northern Ireland and will showcase a broad range of international arts, music and dance performed on a huge outdoor stage. There will also be an exciting selection of food from around the world as well as a variety of activities to suit all ages. The world clothing and handicraft stalls will bring further variety to the day’s activities.

Organised and presented by ArtsEkta Ltd, the Mela will capture and display the huge cultural richness of all groups taking part. Performers will be local, national and international, with a strong community input.

NIE’s Emma Hawthorne said she was pleased to have this opportunity to sponsor and take part in the event, she said:

“This is a great chance for people to find out more about other traditions and cultures. With more people living here in Northern Ireland from different traditions, it is important that services are communicated to them in different languages. NIE will have a stand at the festival promoting our ‘Electricity and You’ booklet, which is available in nine different languages.

“The booklet covers key information for customers on how to open or close a NIE account, get discounted electricity, what to do in the event of power failure, how to use electricity efficiently in their homes and electrical safety. There is also information on the services NIE offers for customers who depend on life supporting electrical equipment and services the company can provide for vulnerable customers.

“This should be a fun event for all the family we hope the sun is shining for the festival!”
