Electric Hillsborough Hedge

24/09/2007

There is a very exciting festival taking place in Hillsborough in a few weeks time that seems to be attracting support from top companies from across Northern Ireland.

The first RAW Outdoors Adventure Festival, incorporating the Banff Film Festival World Tour, is taking place in Hillsborough from Wednesday 3rd until Saturday 6th October 2007.

Northern Ireland Electricity is the latest organisation to pledge their support to the festival by sponsoring a conservation hedge at Downshire Primary School, Hillsborough.

NIE’s Valerie Curran recently visited the Primary School to plant the new conservation hedge, she said: “This festival seems to have its roots firmly established in celebrating the great outdoors and encouraging physical activity. Not only that, it is investing in the local community.

“NIE is happy to be supporting the RAW Outdoors Adventure Festival by providing this conservation hedge. I hope the festival grows from year to year in the same way as this hedge and I wish the organisers all the best.”

The NIE hedge is part of a new garden at Downshire Primary School, which it hopes will attract wildlife and allow the school children to learn about nature within the school grounds.

Roger Warnock, Festival Chairman, added: “This festival offers four days of unparalleled entertainment on adventure and outdoor based activities, sports, culture, art and mountain communities, not seen in Ireland before. This is a fantastic opportunity for people from all walks of life to experience first hand from some of the world’s greatest outdoor minds and find out more on how to get out there and enjoy the great outdoors!
“One of the core elements of the RAW Outdoors Adventure Festival is to provide education about the environment and how to protect the world we live in. Working closely with the school's principle, we plan to help the school transform an area of the school grounds into a conservation area over the next four years. “
On Wednesday 3rd October, come and listen to the world’s greatest living explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, at the kick of this year’s festival. This promises to be a night to inspire, as Sir Ranulph describes his adventurous life and his most recent triumph, the ascent of the north face of the mighty Eiger.

Come and see the world’s most prestigious mountain films. Also the premiere of ‘Underdeveloped’ with Irelands top climbers on Thursday 4th October and Friday 5th October at 7.30pm in Hillsborough Village Centre - adults £6.50, children £3.50.

The Saturday of the Raw Adventure Festival promises to be a day to remember, try your luck at Kayaking, scale a climbing tower or learn from the experts. This will be a day for all the family young and old, outdoor centres, rescue teams and outdoor enthusiasts will get the chance to mingle and exchange views.
