PLUG IN THE SUN FOR AN ECO NEW YEAR!

31/12/2007

Homes across Northern Ireland will soon be plugging in the sun thanks to a new solar powered initiative from Northern Ireland Electricity! Plug in the Sun will offer homeowners 65% funding to install either 1.5kWp or 3kWp solar panel (PV) systems. NIE is offering a 15% top up for the government’s Reconnect grant, which covers 50% of the system and installation costs.

Jenny Boyd, Energy Services Manager, NIE Energy, says the demand for alternative energy sources is growing. “This is a great opportunity for homeowners across the country to benefit from the generous grants on offer, and also to do their bit for the local environment. Generating electricity from the sun is increasing in popularity and we hope Plug in the Sun will encourage more people to opt for environmentally friendly sources of energy.

“In recent years NIE has encouraged the installation of renewable and energy efficient technologies, working with a range of organisations to promote solar, wind, hydro, biomass and geothermal across Northern Ireland. Plug in the Sun offers funding for 1.5kWp and 3kWp systems, which will generate around 1200 and 2400 units of electricity respectively. NIE offers payment for electricity that you generate but don’t use in your home as well as rewards for Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs). As part of the Plug in the Sun programme NIE Energy will help you through this process.”

NIE will be working with local installer Horizon Renewables and the solar units will be manufactured by solarcentury, one of the leading companies in developing renewable technologies.
