LONDONDERRY PRIMARY SCHOOL WISE AS OWLS!

23/01/2008

Northern Ireland Electricity will be helping local school children do a spot of bird watching in Newtownards over the next few months! The local NIE office is supporting an environmental project to erect some bird tables and bird boxes in the grounds of Londonderry Primary School.

NIE Customer Relations Manager for the area, Valerie Curran, visited Londonderry Primary School this week. She says, “NIE is committed to supporting environmental projects, especially those which help promote environmental awareness through the involvement of local schools. NIE uses a number of devices to help keep birds safe around the network, including reflective bird diverters and electronic devices to keep the birds away from overhead lines. We are pleased to support the installation of the bird tables, which encourage pupils to think about the local wildlife and how their actions can impact on their environment.”

Principal of Londonderry Primary School, Mr Moore, says environmental projects capture the pupils’ imagination. “Bringing wildlife to the classroom is a great experience for the pupils and they will be able to monitor the range of birds attracted to the tables and bird boxes throughout the winter. We welcome NIE’s support for an environmental project that encourages pupils to become involved in the welfare of their natural environment.”
